Day Two: August 27th, 2015

We woke at the incredibly reasonable hour of 9am feeling surprisingly refreshed. We both expected to be feeling more jetlag than we actually were, and had been warned that we would be feeling it. We showered once more and sent an email over to my dearest of sisters informing her of our ability to drag ourselves out of bed at a half decent hour. We piddlefarted around the narrow room, partially unpacking our luggage and generally preparing for the day. We’d decided the night before that today we’d play it easy and just lounge around the house enjoying one another’s company. Unfortunately, Nicole and I hadn’t gotten up early enough to join Ruth and Norm for Tai Chi class while the kids were in school, so we had time to waste and waste it we did.

Close to noon, Nicole took a brief nap, and closer to one we left the small room to walk over to Ruth and Norm’s apartment and join them for afternoon festivities.

We presented gifts to the kids. A kendama for Jasper and shirt and Frozen memory game for Winnie as well as a pair of stuffed bears that we’d picked up on a whim in the Nebraska airport. It served well to distract them from the iPad and prepare for lunch and swimming.

We munched on homemade dumplings for lunch and changed into swim gear. We graciously accepted a tour of the apartment facilities from my sister and went up to the second of two swimming pools (one is in perpetual shade 6 months out of the year and, therefore, not used during those 6 months). We swam with Jasper and Norm for a couple of hours before returning inside to converse with my sister about the upcoming days. We came to the conclusion that if we were up early enough we could go with her to take the kids to school the following day, but we’d not be going running as she wasn’t feeling the best (thinking she had caught (or recaught) a stomach bug that had plagued the household a couple weeks ago.

With that decided, we talked about dinner and left the apartment with Norm, Jasper, and Winnie. A quick walk down the street brought us to an open market/food court with easily a dozen, if not more, places to grab a thing or two to eat. We were given the option of ‘safe with chicken and rice’ or ‘pick something from a vendor.’

We were beginning to tire at this point and opted for the safe route of chicken and rice. The meal was pleasant and simple: a scoop of rice with chicken and lentils on the side. We were also treated to sugar cane juice with wedges of lemon dropped into it. A local delight. After eating our fill, and watching the kids munch readily on dinner, we packed up and left the food court. We walked with Norm and the kids down to the river and said our good byes for the night there making our way back to the apartment to call it a night.
